The historic arboreteum is located in Radnor Township’s Ithan Valley Park. Developed in the early 1800′s it was one of the earliest gardens of the type in the United states. “In the number of distinct species of trees and shrubs it was doubtless unrivaled in his [Evans’] day, while in herbaceous plants it had few equals.” (J.W. Harshberger, Garden and Forest Magazine, May 12, 1897)
W. Hinckle Smith purchased lands in early 1900s; Built mansion (Timberline) and gardens, maintaining and enhancing the grounds of the original ‘arboretum’.
